Mr. McCoy is an old pirate who once sailed with Henry Avery. Jack Rackham searches him out in Nassau to guide him to the uncharted Skeleton Island.

Biography[]

Background[]

McCoy sailed with the crew of the legendary Henry Avery before retiring. During his career with Avery, he sailed to Skeleton Island. Eventually, he was the last member of Avery's crew alive in Nassau[1].

Season Four[]

After learning from Mrs. Mapleton that Woodes Rogers and Flint are sailing to Skeleton Island to trade the cache of gems for Madi's release, Jack Rackham and his quartermaster, Featherstone, work on trying to get there, as it is not on any maps. Jack and Featherstone find McCoy, who claims to know the way to the island and promises to help lead them to it. Jack and Featherstone later observe McCoy drinking in the Inn. Jack is worried, pointing out that McCoy is quite old. Featherstone reminds of him of McCoy's promises and that he's the only man from Avery's crew left on the island[1].

En route to the island, Jack approaches McCoy while he is standing at the bow. Jack asks him how long it's been since he sailed with Avery to Skeleton Island, telling McCoy that he has a lot riding on this venture. The philosophical old sailor tells Jack that one day, he'll retire from the Account, and the sea will fade into a distant memory, but one that will continue to call to him. And when it does, the memory will feel fresh. McCoy continues to say that he's watched what Jack and his generation of pirates have done with the Account since McCoy and his left it. He says that they've accomplished things that McCoy and his generation could never have dreamed of. McCoy adds that from what he's heard, if they reach Skeleton Island, it might mean the end of Governor Rogers, and keep the Account alive for a little longer. Jack says that they'll do that and more. McCoy then promises to take him to the island. He finishes by saying just what he wants to hear; to hold onto the pirate life for as long as he can. McCoy dies of a heart attack before reaching the island. Ellers then informs Jack, and tells him that James saw him clutch his chest and fall to the deck. Jack, frustrated prods the body with his foot several times to see if he was really dead. Fortunately Augustus Featherstone has learned enough to lead them there[2].

Quotes[]

By McCoy[]

"One day, you'll leave the account. Take a wife, father children. See less and less of the sea until she becomes like a painting hanging on the wall, static and irrelevant... to your daily existence. But she'll keep on calling you. And when she does, you'll step into that painting and feel the swell beneath your feet. It'll all come back as if it were like yesterday."
