"Know this now that the fight is over, you have nothing more to fear from us today. Because we know this fight was not of your making. It was the choice of our true enemy. Your true enemy. The tyrant captain."
―Singleton[src]

Singleton was a crew member for the Walrus, and the assumed next in line under Captain Flint. Singleton was fairly open about his dislike for the captain, and it was known that he was attempting to bring the majority of the crew to his side so he could replace Flint.

Biography[]

Season One[]

Singleton had been increasing his power on the ship, taking every opportunity to attempt to sway the crews vote in his favor. The ship's quartermaster, Gates, knew this and made it clear to Singleton that he knew this. After taking a trading vessel, Singleton made a speech to its crew that need no longer fear him now that they have taken the ship, and that the true enemy is the "Tyrant Captain". He was able to convince four to join, but Gates told him that they couldn't afford it, and that he knew Singleton cared more about their votes than skill. The crew is then forced to flee when the Royal Navy Man O' War, the HMS Scarborough, is spotted nearby.

Singleton and Gates

Gates confronting Singleton about his treatment of the trading ship's captain.

After docking at Nassau, Singleton went to the Tavern, where he shared a drink with several crew mates. While there, Sanderson of the Trinity told Eleanor Guthrie to fuck herself. After being told who Sanderson crews with, and that they had a good haul recently, Eleanor jokingly says she will go do that, because she gets aroused in the presence of "earners." Later that night, Singleton was approached by Jack Rackham, who told him that Gates had been bribing the crew and important people to vote for the Captain instead of Singleton, including Mosiah, who controls just enough votes to sway the outcome. When Singleton confronted Mosiah on the beach, he was backed by Rackham, Anne Bonny, and their Captain who kill both Mosiah, and his guard, Levi.

Singleton death

Later, back on the Walrus, he officially called for a vote, knowing he had the votes. However, the Captain accused him of theft and having stoked the crew's resentment towards him to cover up his crimes. The two decided to settle it with a duel to the death, Singleton not trusting a trial with Gates as judge. While Singleton gained the upper hand early in the fight, Flint disarmed him, took a cannonball, and beat Singleton to death[1].

Following his death, his body was propped against a wall on the boat deck and urinated upon by several sailors. Randall, one of his close coconspirators, remarks that that is the result of stealing. This angers Turk, another of the conspirators, but Morley quiets them, not wanting the rest of the crew to suspect them. Ashore, Gates and Billy have a conversation about how Flint and Billy lied about Singleton, and Gates assures Billy he did the right thing. Meanwhile, Vane waits on the beach for the news that Singleton has been elected, and is later shocked when Flint and the celebrating crew walk into The Tavern. The news that Flint has the Urca Schedule causes Vane to rush to The Inn, where Jack Rackham is attempting to buy it from Max, Silver's proxy. Max and Jack try to explain that Flint framed Singleton, but Vane gets angry and chokes out Max, but Jack proves that it isn't Singleton by stabbing through the peephole in the wall. The stab nicks Silver's face and he flees, but Jack sarcastically remarks that it is proof that the seller isn't Singleton, unless he has risen from the grave[2].

Billy continues to worry about Silver, bringing up to Gates that he knows Singleton wasn't the thief, but Gates pushes them aside. Meanwhile, to prove his trustworthiness, Silver tries to identify mutinous sentiments among the crew. He brings his findings to Billy, and he identifies Randall, Turk and Morley as the last three mutineers. Both Morley and Turk continue to insist that Singleton wasn't a thief. Billy Bones goes to talk to Morley while he's on watch and quell the rumor. Morley says that Singleton "had his warts" but wasn't a thief. When Billy maintains that he found the stolen page on Singleton's body, Morley relents[3].

After Randall accuses John Silver of being the true thief, Dufresne, De Groot and Dr. Howell discuss it. Dufresne says that in hindsight, it was awfully convenient that Flint found the page on Singleton. Later, while Dufresne finalizes plans for their mutiny against Flint with Gates, he admits that they could forgive Flint for many things, including Singleton, but not his seeming role in Billy's presumed death[4].

When the Urca de Lima is not found at the location the location Silver provided and a Spanish Man O' War is spotted nearby, Flint tries to fight the warship. Gates refuses to help Flint anymore and informs him of the mutiny he is leading, telling Flint that he has revealed the truth about Singleton, Silver and the schedule to them. Flint regretfully kills Gates and is able to put his plan into motion. However, Dufresne launches the mutiny, and accuses Flint of the murders of Singleton, Billy and Gates. Ultimately, the pirates are defeated by the Spanish[5].

Season Two[]

After Billy Bones washes ashore on New Providence Island, John Silver stashes him in a Tobacco Storehouse in order to go over what he is going to say to the crew and prevent him from saying anything that would undermine Flint's leadership. When Billy realizes this, Silver explains that he hopes he is still the same man who stood by Flint when handed a blank page pulled from Singleton's corpse[6].

Charles Vane confesses to Billy Bones that he orchestrated the entire Singleton affair with the goal of deposing Flint and thus encouraging key men to defect to his crew, chief among them Billy[7]

Memorable Quotes[]

"Know this: Now that the fight is over, you have nothing more to fear from us today. Because we know this fight is not of your making. It was the choice of our true enemy, your true enemy, the tyrant captain! Many of us once sailed on ships like this one. We know what it is to be slaves to his whim, his violence, his shit wages, his insufferable stupidity, so we've made for ourselves a different life where we don't rely on wages, we earn a stake, and where our pleasure isn't a sin, it's a virtue. We also know what it's like to see our brothers die."[1]
